viola and flute, respectively

January 3 | 7:00 PM

In preparation for the recording and release of their solo albums on the newly-minted New Amsterdam label, violist Nadia Sirota and flutist Alex Sopp present a concert of new and recent works by some of their long-time collaborators, including Marcos Balter, Lisa Bielawa, Judd Greenstein, and Nico Muhly. The concert explores contrasts and similarities; framed by pairs of works written for each player by Nico and Judd, the show showcases disparate instrumentation, including provocative electronic landscapes and traditional chamber music pairings.

Alex Sopp lives, loves, and plays all genres of music in New York City. She performs, premieres, and records with NOW Ensemble, Sufjan Stevens, Philip Glass, The National, Nico Muhly, The Knights, The Mark Morris Dance Group Music Ensemble, and ACME (American Contemporary Music Ensemble), and has recently made appearances with the New York Philharmonic. A native of St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands, Alex is a graduation of The Juilliard School. New York-based violist Nadia Sirota is best known as an interpreter of new music, having commissioned and premiered dozens of works by composers and songwriters including Marcos Balter, Ben Frost, Judd Greenstein, Nico Muhly, Valgeir Sigurdsson, and Ryan Streber. As soloist and chamber musician, Nadia has collaborated with such artists as Joseph Kalichstein, Itzhak Perlman, and the Silk Road Ensemble. She regularly performs with groups including ACME, Continuum and AXIOM. In the fall of 2007, Nadia joined the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music for its new Masters Program in Contemporary Music Performance.
